The pavement runs out. Then eight-tenths of a mile of dirt road, then a gate that's already open — and that's the last decision you have to make for a while. Out here there's no town glow, no neighbor's porch light, nothing to hear but what the night is doing. Just 26 acres, a fire pit waiting on you, and more stars than you remembered existed. Most folks drive out here to get away from the city. Most folks stay up a lot later than they meant to.

ABOUT THIS SPACE

Twenty-six acres, and the nearest light that isn't yours is a long way off. A fire pit with a cooking grate, horseshoe pits with solar lights that come on by themselves after dark, a charcoal grill, an outdoor dining table, a raised deck. Around the back, an outdoor shower that runs hot — a real shower, not a rinse.

Now the honest part, because the name confuses people: there's no water on this property. No pond, no creek, no dock. Reel Laxin' is about the pace, not a fishing hole. What's here is the other half of a fishing trip — a cleaning station with its own sink, a chest freezer in the pantry for the catch, and room to park a truck, trailer and boat without shuffling vehicles at six in the morning.

Inside, the whole main living level is downstairs — kitchen, walk-in pantry, dining room, both living rooms, and the primary bedroom with its own bath. Entry is level from outside, so anybody who'd rather skip stairs doesn't have to. One living room has a shuffleboard table, and it's reliably why people are still up at midnight.

The kitchen is fully remodeled: five-burner gas stove and oven, dishwasher, microwave. The dining table seats ten — nobody eats in shifts. Three bedrooms sleep ten in real beds: the primary downstairs with a king and en-suite, and upstairs a queen with two twins, a room with two queens, and the second full bath. Smart TVs throughout for your own streaming logins. Beds made, towels out, extra blankets for cool evenings.

One caveat before you book: the internet out here is satellite. Fine for email and browsing, but it slows and drops in storms, so bring a hotspot if your week depends on being online.

LOCATION & WHAT'S NEARBY

You're inland, in rural Brazoria County. The coast is a drive, not a stroll — that's the trade, and what you get for it is nobody around.

West Columbia, 15 minutes — groceries and fuel (H-E-B, Walmart). Stock up on the way in: Sweeny has no supermarket and there's nothing past West Columbia. Hanson Riverside County Park is the same distance and it's the closest boat ramp, on the San Bernard with a courtesy dock.

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge — Big Slough is a 7.5-mile gravel loop you drive slowly with the windows down. Free, sunrise to sunset, over 320 bird species. Spring and fall migration is the real show.

Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson is free, with a touch tank the kids won't leave.

Freeport, 35 to 40 minutes — offshore charters. Summer red snapper books two to three months out, so call early.

Surfside Jetty County Park, about 40 minutes — a granite walkway running out into the Gulf, 8 to dusk, no fee, redfish and trout year-round. Surfside Beach is 45 to 50, with Kitty's Purple Cow when you're done.

Far enough that you feel like you left. Close enough that the Gulf is a morning, not an expedition.

GUEST ACCESS

Check-in is 4:00 PM, check-out is 10:00 AM. There's an electronic keypad on the front door and your code arrives a couple of days ahead — no lockbox, no key handoff, nobody to meet. Come whenever you like after four.

The gate at the road stays open; just drive through. The whole house and the grounds around it are yours. There are exterior security cameras covering the outside of the property, and none inside.

PARKING

Free, on site, and more of it than you'll need. Park anywhere on the driveway running up to the house — no assigned spots, no permits, nothing to pay.

Room for trucks, trailers and boats without anybody moving a vehicle to let somebody else out, which is a good part of why fishing groups end up here. Footing is rural rather than paved. No EV charger.

HOUSE RULES

Quiet hours are 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM. Ten guests, and only the folks on the reservation stay overnight — daytime visitors are welcome, just let us know ahead. No parties or events, and no smoking or vaping inside.

Dogs are welcome, $120 flat for the stay however many you bring. There's no fence, so keep them with you and under control — the neighbors keep livestock, and that's the one we'd ask you to be strict about.

The house runs on a septic system, so only toilet paper goes in the toilet. No wipes, even the ones labeled flushable.

Keep the fire pit attended and put it fully out before you turn in. Brazoria County issues burn bans in dry spells — check the county status before you light it. Bring your own firewood and charcoal; there's none on site.

And no food or drinks on the shuffleboard table.

WHO THIS HOME IS BEST FOR

Couples getting out of the city. That's exactly what our first guests came for — no schedule, no traffic, a fire and a sky.

Fishing groups working Freeport and Surfside. Park the truck, trailer and boat where they land, clean your catch at the station, freeze it, and be gone again at five.

Multi-family and multi-generation trips. Ten in real beds, one table everybody fits at, and a primary bedroom downstairs with its own bath so nobody climbs stairs at bedtime.

Birders in spring and fall — the refuges are minutes away and the migration is the real thing.

Who it isn't for: anyone who needs sand out the front door, dependable video calls, or a fenced yard for the dog.
